Round one of the men’s West Coast Conference tournament starts tonight in Las Vegas. The games are held at the Orleans Arena beginning with the Pepperdine Waves (7-23, 3-11 WCC) – Loyola Marymount Lions (16-14, 7-7) match-up at 6PM local time, 9PM Eastern.
Play for Pepperdine got worse toward the end of the season. With no major injuries to report, it is mind-boggling to see how this Pepperdine team has covered the spread in nine straight games. The Waves played Gonzaga in Spokane late in January and lost respectably, if there is such a thing, 84-91. This would be the start of an 0-11 losing streak for Pepperdine. The Waves would host the Gonzaga Bull Dogs at home one month later and lose 72-54.
What really hurts Pepperdine is their lack of bench and experience. The Waves have five freshman on their roster and no seniors. In addition, there are only six players on the roster who have played in all 30 games. One of the few bright spots for the waves has been the play of . Guard Keion Bell. Bell has averaged 18.3 points per game, 43% from the field 75% from the free throw line, and 35% from beyond the 3.
Loyola Marymount comes into tonight’s game a 9.5 point favorite. The Lions beat Gonzaga on Feb 18 at home 74-66 and followed with another win at home versus Portland and on the road against San Diego. Lions players’ successes include sophomore forward Drew Viney and and junior guard Vernon Teel being named to the all-WCC team last Monday. At 6’4″ Teel has averaged 14.7 PPG with 5.8 assists and 5.3 rebounds while shooting about 39% from the 3. Six-foot-seven Viney is the best forward in the WCC. He has averaged 16.9 PPG, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists while shooting 42.2% from the 3.
