The University of Pennsylvania Quakers (6-21, 5-8 Ivy League) travel to New Jersey to play the Princeton Tigers. In an interesting match-up Princeton (19-8, 10-3) is using their ambitions and previous March experiences to play well and run hot tonight. The game tips off at the L. Stockwell Jadwin Gym in Princeton at 8PM ET.
Penn is 5-0 against the spread coming into tonight’s game as 12.5 point underdogs. They also boast a 5-2 record against the spread in their last seven against Princeton. Odds makers opened the total at 141 points.
Princeton has historically dominated the Ivy League. And have post season experience. A victory here over Penn would give the Tigers another 20-win season.
Princeton coach Sydney Johnson will be focused tonight as they will be playing in one of the lower profile tournaments. Johnson played for Princeton from (1993-97) and was part of the 1996 team beat UCLA in the first round 43-41. They are also famous for being closest 16th seed to nearly upset a one seed when they lost to Georgetown 450-49 in 1989.
The last Quakers and Tigers head-to-head match-up occurred on Feb. 16. Princeton won on the road 58-51. In that game Dan Mavraides, the 6’3″ third year guard, scored a career-high 24 points, shooting 10 for 11 (91%) from the free throw line. Princeton hit 19 for 38 (50%) from the field.
Pricnecton Doug Davis leads the team with 12.4 points per game while Mavraides leads the squad with 4.4 boards per contest. Penn’s Sophomore guard Zach Rozen is averaging 17.7 points per game while junior forward Jack Eggleston is averaging 6.4 rebounds.
