The Cornell Big Red advance to the Sweet 16 after an 87-69 win over
Wisconsin. This is the first time an Ivy League team has made it past the second round of the NCAA tournament since 1998. Thursday’s match-up against the Kentucky Wildcats (32-2). Coverage begins on CBS at 10PM ET.
The Big Red never let up in their win over the Badgers.
Big Red coach Steve Donahue commented that his team “stayed confident
and poised through every possession.” Though Cornell ran over a Big 10
team, how will that translate against one seeded Kentucky? Odds makers opened
the line at Kentucky -9 and the total at 145. The total quickly moved up two points to 147.
Cornell looks like the better team on paper but keep in mind they played a much easier schedule. For the regular season, these teams overall shooting
percentages are about the same with Cornell at 48 percent and UK at 47.9.
The Big Red averaged 16.5 assists per game while Kentucky dished out 14.7. Kentucky may nit have the numbers but have superior talent at every position on the floor.
So far in the tournament Cornell has been shooting from downtown very well hitting 53.3% from beyond the three point line in Sunday’s game. Ryan Wittman went three for five, Jon Jagues one for two, Chris Wroblewski a perfect two for two, and Louis Dale went two for six. Cornell’s Jagues led Cornell during the season shooting 47.2 percent
from-three-point land. The other three have also had contributed from long range nailing least 43% of their shots.
The University of Kentucky continued season long dominance with a 90-60 win over number nine Wake Forest. The Wildcats were unstoppable shooting 60.3 percent from the field. Everyone on the roster touched the ball. The Wildcats will be a well-rested bunch after an easy win in which Player of the Year candidate John Wall played only 29 minutes.
The Big Red has played outstanding basketball in the first two rounds of the tournament and now have to face the most talented team in college basketball. Wall may not be the best player on the team with Demarcus Cousins leading the way in the post. Kentucky is focused on getting to the championship[p but must first figure out how to stop Cornell.
