The Syracuse Orange (30-4) will play the Butler Bulldogs (30-4) Thursday at 7:10PM ET in the West Region at the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City on CBS.
Odds makers opened up the Syracuse Orange as a 6.5 point favorite and the total at 138.5. Some money has come in on the Bulldogs leaving the current line at -6. The total has remained the same or bet down to 138.
The Orange that lost to Georgetown in the Big East Conference tournament is not the same Syracuse team that we saw during the regular season and that played in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. The Loss to the Hoyas may have come at the right time, Syracuse bounced back with wins over Vermont (79-56) and Gonzaga (87-65). Coach Jim Boeheim’s came out of nowhere to end up as one of the top four teams in the country, They started off the season out of the top 25, and they finished a number one seed in the NCAA tournament.
The Butler Bulldogs have also had a strong season. A team that went 18-0 in the Horizon League and now 30-4 overall is doing something right. Butler coach Brad Stevens isn’t concerned that Butler is an underdog here in this spot This is their fourth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament and their fifth seed was the highest in school history. The Bulldogs entered the tournament ranked eleventh by AP and eighth in the Coaches Poll. They are in the sweet 16 after defeating UTEP 77-59 and Murray State 54-52.
The last time these two teams played head to head was in the post season in 2002. Syracuse beat Butler 66-65. The final score was under the total of 132.5. Butler’s last five out of seven games have gone under the total because of their success on defense. The Bulldogs have the 11th ranked defense in the country allowing just 59.8 points. Syracuse is the best shooting team in college basketball shooting 51.7% and will need to get their transition game going to get some easy baskets. Though there have been many upsets so far in this tournament, the Bulldogs have five starters back from last season
Syracuse showed how they could get through the first two rounds easily without their center Arinze Onuaku. The Orange will play without him on Thursday as well. Butler will need to find a way to shoot through Syracuse’s zone defense and slow down the Orange in transition.
