Two teams that almost everyone has forgot about in their bracket will be squaring for the Midwest Region final. Tennessee (28-8) was given a a sixth seed while the Michigan State (27-8) came on as the fifth seed.
Neither team is a stranger to play a few games on the tournament. The Volunteers have made the sweet 16 three out of the last four seasons. They moved into the Elite Eight for the first time under head coach Bruce Pearl.
Michigan State can never be overlooked anytime that they have been in the tournament. Michigan State has been a constant in the big dance under coach Tom Izzo with 13 straight NCAA tournaments, seven trips to the round of 16, five Final Fours, a national title in 2000.
The game will tip in this college basketball contest from St, Luis in the Edward Jones Dome at 2:20 Eastern Time on CBS in front of a national Audience.
The Las Vegas Sports Books open the point spread with fifth seeded Michigan State as a favorite at -1 and the total was set at 135.5. The Early action on the game has the money on the Tennessee Volunteers of the SEC Conference leaving moving the line and making the Volunteers a 2-point favorite, The Total has been bet up to 137 as some of the books.
The Spartans were -120 favorite on the opening money line but they are now a +105 underdog. The Volunteers opened at an even +100 but are now a-125 favorite.
Michigan State has been able to advance without their best player Kalin Lucas. His back-up Corie Lucious has been spectacular hitting a game winning 3-pointer against Maryland in their 85-83 victory. Lucious came up big against in the Spartans victory 57-52 win over Northern Iowa playing 39 minutes and helping limit the Panthers to just 10 free throws and no field in the last 10:21 of the game.
The Tennessee Volunteers have advanced to the Elite Eight by winning a 76-73 battle with Ohio State. It was the play of forward Wayne Chism in the second half that won the game for the Volunteers. Chism scored 18 points in the last half finishing the game with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
The Volunteers will not have the easy access they had in the paint when they take on the front-court if the Spartans. What we will see is the Volunteer defense put full court pressure on the Ohio State guards to create turnovers and push the pace. Michigan State will look to pound the ball inside against the Volunteers in a half court offense.
