The Butler Bulldogs 32-4 will be the first team since the UCLA Bruins were able to play in the final four in their home city. The Butler Bulldogs campus is just five miles away from Lucas Oil Stadium, site of this year’s NCAA Tournament Final Four.
Butler will be making their first trip to the Final Four against a Michigan State (28-8) team that will be making their sixth trip to the Final Four in 12 years under the guidance of head coach Tom Izzo. Everyone was quick to forget that the Spartans made it to the finals last season before getting blown out by the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Now the First mid-major since to make the final four since George Mason will be taking on last season’s runner up. The Las Vegas Betting lines opened with Butler as the favorite at -1. Some money has come in on Butler moving the number to -1.5 The Total came out at 127 and has been bet down to 125.5. The Money line on the game opened and is currently Butler -125 and Michigan State at +105.
The Bulldogs come into this game winning 24 straight games, the longest winning streak in the country. Their defense has been awesome all season holding their opponents to just 59.6 points per game on 41.4% shooting from the floor. Over the last five games Butler has cranked it up on their opponents allowing just 54.2 points on 40.3% shooting from the floor.
The Spartan program is built to play in March. They are a physical team that prides themselves in rebounding. On the season they have a +9.7 rebound margin. Offensively, the Spartans have a balanced attach in which several players contribute. On the season, they scored 72.4 points per game on 47.2% shooting. When playing on neutral courts they are scoring 75.9 points on 48.6% shooting.
Butler is happy to come as home to play in the Final Four but they will have to deal with the week long distractions of being the hometown heroes. The Bulldogs will have to deal with the comparisons to the Hoosiers movie that starred Gene Hackman. The movie has a scene that was shot in Butler’s home court Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Michigan State Spartans have several players nicked up and will be without the services of Kalin Lucas, arguably their best player. This might just prove how good this team is. Lucas went out in the game to Maryland and the Spartans are still two games away from winning yet another championship.
