The North Carolina Tar Heel wills be taking on the Rhode Island Rams. There is no doubt in the minds of most that these two squads have the talent to compete in the NCAA Tournament but had to settle foe invitation to the NIT tournament. The majority of the games are played on the higher seeds home courting leaving the Final Four: the semi-finals and final game to played in the Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The Opening Number out of Las Vegas for the semifinal game between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Rhode Island Rams came out as a Pick ‘em and the total came out a consensus 149. There has been some money in on the side of the Rhode Island Rams to move to a 1-point favorite in some far away locations. Both the North Carolina and Rhode Island are -110 on the money line.
The Tar Heels may be the biggest disappointment of the NCAA season. After winning the championship last season, the Tar heels were left with a brand line up that would have to rely heavily on Freshmen. Gone were the services of Ty Lawson, and Tyler Hansborough. This years team struggled all the way through the regular season with inconsistency and injuries to a 16-16 record. There was no invitation to the NCAA tournament after the Tar Heels were bounced from the ACC tournament in the first round 62-58 by Georgia Tech.
The Tar Heels have given up on the season and looked forward to another star-studded recruiting class in 2010. Give head coach Roy Williams credit for getting his players motivated and focused to win the NIT tournament. The Tar Heels beat a pesky William and Mary team home 80-72 and then took to the road where they were 7.5 underdog and beat them 76-74 on a last second shot by Larry Drew. They then traveled to UAN to play in front of a hostile crowd as a 4.5 underdog and won that game 60-55. Th Tar Heels are looking to win the NIT championship and have the most talent in the final four teams left.
Rhode Island Rams (23-9) was left out of the tournament despite have a very good season. They struggled to produce any big wins on the road and were left outside of the bubble of the NCAA tournament. However, they did go into Virginia Tech as 6.5 underdogs and beat the Hokies 79-72. The Hokies had a 17-1 record record going into their last game.
The Rams will take their big victory and head to Madison Square Garden to take on Tar Heel basketball team that is playing with confidence and hungry to redeem a tough season by winning the NIT tournament.
