The Milwaukee Bucks play the Atlanta Hawks in Game Two of the first round of the Eastern Conference Finals. Tip off at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta is 7:00 ET. The game will be covered by NBA TV.
Atlanta leads the series 1-0 after winning Game One 102-92. The Hawks flew past the Bucks leading by as much as 20 points in the first quarter, finishing half time 62-40. Everything went Atlanta’s way.
The Hawks have turned around from having consecutive losing seasons including a 13 win season in 2004-2005 to winning 53 games. Atlanta’s 6’7″ guard Joe Johnson deserves plenty of credit. Having averaged 21.3 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game this season, Johnson played a hard 43 minutes in last Saturday’s Game One, in which he scored 22 points and had five assists.
Odds makers are taking 7.5 points from Atlanta in tonight’s game. The total opened at 189 and has been bet down to 187.5. The total has gone over in Atlanta’s last five home games versus Milwaukee.
Both teams have been successful covering the spread this season (Atlanta 48-35, Milwaukee 53-28-1), but Atlanta is a force at home. Overall, the Hawks are 34-7 at home, and they are 6-2 at the spread in their last eight at home.
Milwaukee is lead by guard John Salmons and 20 year-old point guard Brandon Jennings. Salmons had 16 points and six steals in Game One. Jennings had 34 points, three assists, three rebounds, and shot 4-6 from three point range all in 40 minutes of play. Jennings has averaged 15.5 points, 5.7 assists, and 1.3 steals per game this season in an average of 32.6 minutes. The NBA rookie who graduated from high school in 2008 and played one year of professional basketball in Italy is putting up Kobe Bryant or LeBron James type rookie numbers. The Bucks will be depending on Jennings to have a shot at beating Atlanta in this first round series.
The Hawks have veteran point guard Mike Bibby who was also drafted out of the University of Arizona at the age of 20 in 1998. Brandon Jennings had the option of attending Arizona but turned it down to make money as a pro in Europe. In 32 minutes of play last Saturday, Bibby went 8-9 from the field and 3-3 from beyond the three point arc, scoring a total of 19 points.
