The Utah Jazz are back in Denver to play the Nuggets for Game Five of their first round series of the Western Conference Finals. Tip off at the Pepsi Center is at 10:30 ET. TV coverage is provided by TNT.
Odds makers have Denver as seven point favorites in tonight’s game. The total is set at 215.
The Jazz lead the series 3-1. Utah is 6-1 to win the Western Conference. Denver is 18-1 to represent the Western Conference in the NBA championship game.
Nuggets small forward Carmelo Anthony has been blowing up the scoreboard this post season averaging 34.5 points per game. Anthony averaged 28.2 points per game over 69 games in the regular season. Carmelo had 42 points in 38 minutes of play in Game One at home where Denver won 126-113. In his most recent performance on Sunday, Carmelo Anthony had 39 points in 44 minutes of play. He also went 9-9 from the free throw line, had 11 rebounds, and four steals.
Nuggets point guard Chauncey Billups averaged 19.5 points per game during the regular season. He has been averaging 17.8 so far in this post season. Billups’ three point percentage is a factor in the difference in points. During the regular season Billups averaged 38.6% from beyond the three. So far he has only hit six of 20 three point attempts against Utah. This could balance out tonight with the expectation that Denver scores a lot of points at home.
Utah power forward Carlos Boozer has been a consistent force in the Jazz’s three game winning streak. Boozer especially came through last Sunday when he had 31 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists.
Utah’s Deron Williams has been an additional force on the court with four straight double-doubles. Williams has hit eight of his 16 three point attempts in this first round series. Overall, Williams has played better against Denver than most teams in the West. The Jazz point guard has averaged 26.8 points per game over the past four games while he has averaged 19.3 points per game this season against the West as a whole.
The higher seeded Nuggets now face having to win three straight to move on to the second round of the playoffs. With the Nuggets money line at -340, odds makers and the betting public feel Denver has a 77% implied probability of winning tonight; thus, there is a good chance of seeing Game Six on Friday night.
