The Yankees and Toronto meet tonight for the 17th time this season. The Blue Jays have the edge 9-7 and the Yankees are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings in Toronto.
New York is hoping that with their Cy Young candidate CC Sabathia on the mound tonight they can get a much needed win trailing the Rays for the division Title. With their game last night ending with the Blue Jays on top 7-5 after yet another lackluster performance on the mound by A.J Burnett, the Yankees are hoping that Sabathia’s past success against Toronto continues. CC has won three straight and five of his last six against the Blue Jays, and is 4-1 with a 2.73 ERA at Rogers Centre.
No Blue Jays have had much success against the ace with Edwin Encarnacion being the only Toronto player hitting better than .250 (3 for 10). Vernon Wells has had some success against the Yankees at home this season hitting .448 with four home runs and 12 RBI’s, but is only 6 for 31 with two homers lifetime versus Sabathia.
CC Sabathia will still have to come out tonight with a dominating performance. He is coming off his worst outing of the season when Sabathia had a 3-1 lead going into the sixth inning against Tampa Bay on Thursday before he started getting rocked. He ended with a season-high seven runs and 10 hits charged to him in 5 1/3 innings and the Yankees went on to lose 10-3.
The Blue Jays lead the Major Leagues this season with Jose Bautista leading the way with 52. They have hit 243 homers this season one off their season high set in 2000 and leading the league.
Toronto will try to slow New York down tonight with rookie right-hander Kyle Drabek in only his third start. He is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA. In his last start Drabek gave up three runs and four hits with two of those hits being home runs over five innings ending in a 6-3 loss at home against Seattle.
New York needs just a single win in any of their remaining six games to clinch their 15th playoff berth in 16 seasons. While looking rough in their last 6 games losing 5-6 they are confident tonight against the Jays with Sabathia on the mound looking for their much needed win and to get ready for the post season.
