This Wednesday night matchup between the heavily favored No. 5 Duke and unranked Virginia is an always-intriguing ACC game. The line opened at and is still -14.5 same with the over/under opening at 133 and moving to 132.5. They are hoping to extend their winning streak over Virginia that is currently at six straight.
Duke during its six-game winning streak has averaged an 18-point victory margin. A win tonight would give the Blue Devils their 16th win in their last 17 games and making them 24-2 this season. In the last 27 meetings, Duke has dominated winning 27 of the last 30 games with most of the recent games not even being a close score. Although on their Jan. 15 meeting, it took a large second half comeback Duke to pull out the win of 76-60. Virginia led 31-25 at the half then the Blue Devils found their shots and shot 58.6 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes with Nolan Smith scoring 29 points.
Smith who is the leading scorer in the ACC with 21.4 points per game but has averaged an even more impressive 23.3 points per game in conference play. On Sunday, Duke almost had to do without Smith after he left the game against Miami with a scratch to his left eye. He came back to the floor and scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half with Duke winning 81-71.
For this game Hall of Fame, coach Krzyzewski moved Seth Curry into the starting lineup after starting Tyler Thornton the previous three games. Curry dropped 16 points the game after he had 20 in a comeback victory over No. 20 North Carolina. Curry did not have any impact in the Blue Devils last meeting against the Cavaliers with just 7 points and shooting one of six from the field.
Virginia will most likely start two new players Wednesday. Freshman K.T Harrell has come off the bench the last three games and Freshman Sammy Zeglinski and Joe Harris have joined the lineup. Will Sherrill though did not play Saturday in a loss to Florida State because of a leg injury. Saturday Virginia shot their lowest mark in the ACC with 31.7 percent. The Cavaliers have one of the best three point percentages in their conference with 38.7 percent but want to stray away from this after attempting a season high 30 in their loss Saturday.
It will be an intriguing matchup watching Duke’s high-powered offense take on the three shooting leaders in their conference. Will the long ball be enough to topple the giants? Many do not think so but anything can happen.
